Minor Injuries Unit's (MIUs)
If you have an injury that is not serious you can go to a Minor Injury Unit for help, instead of going to an Accident & Emergency department.
The Minor Injury Units (MIUs) are staffed by experienced emergency practitioners who are supported by health care assistants and there are no doctors in MIU. Patients that attend one of the units will be assessed and treated as quickly as possible. If your condition cannot be dealt with at the Minor Injuries Unit, then you will be referred to your GP or nearest Emergency Department or to another appropriate service.
What sort of injuries can be treated at a Minor Injury Unit?
- Broken bones (fractures)
- Dislocations, sprains and strains
- Assaults
- Wounds and minor burns
- Insect stings
- Rib injuries (if there is no coughing up blood or chest infection)
- Insect, animal and human bites
- Foreign bodies to eyes, ears and nose
- Head or face injuries (if there is no loss or change in level of consciousness)
- Non-penetrating eye and ear injuries
- Minor neck injuries
- Minor back injuries
Please Note - Not all Minor Injury Units offer all of the above. Please contact your Minor Injury Unit to see if they can deal with your injury/illness before visiting. For example, some may not be able to x-ray to find out if you have a fracture.
What cannot be treated at a Minor Injury Unit
Minor injury units cannot treat patients who have collapsed, chest pain, breathing problems, abdominal pain, alcohol related problems, drug overdose, gynaecology problems, health conditions normally seen by a GP such as minor illness, mental health problems, dental problems, neck injury, chest or back injury.
MIU's are a walk-in service and no appointment is required and NHS 111 Wales is the first port of call of course. However, if you are still unsure, it is better to telephone the MIU, to to direct you to the right place, at the right time first time.
